Text of the speech of the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran؛
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Distinguished guests,
I am honored to welcome you all this afternoon, and I thank you for accepting our invitation to this reception commemorating the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
The Islamic Revolution of Iran manifested the will of a nation that, drawing upon its faith, historical identity, and desire for independence, overthrew a dependent dictatorship in 1979. This Revolution was not merely a transfer of political power, but the foundation for establishing national sovereignty, democracy, and the restoration of the Iranian nation’s dignity and independence.
Over the past 47 years, despite extensive and oppressive sanctions, the Islamic Republic of Iran has achieved significant progress across various fields by relying on its indigenous capacities. Advances in science and technology, expansion of social services, widespread development in health and education, and growing self-sufficiency in key sectors stand as testimony to this progress.
In foreign policy, the Islamic Republic of Iran has pursued a balanced approach, dynamic diplomacy, and intelligent engagement. It has steadily expanded relations with neighboring countries and maintained active membership in important regional and international organizations. Iran considers itself a responsible, independent, and influential actor in the region and the world, consistently advocating for dialogue, multilateralism, and cooperation to ensure peace, stability, and sustainable development.
From its inception, the Islamic Republic of Iran defined its path based on the principles of independence, freedom, justice, and the rejection of all forms of subjugation. This path has been followed with resilience and continuity despite immense pressures and challenges. Nevertheless, hegemonic powers, viewing Iran’s independence and freedom as contrary to their illegitimate interests, have relentlessly conspired against the Islamic Republic. Their aim has been to undermine the will of the Iranian nation by engineering successive crises.
These conspiracies have included the imposition of an eight-year war by Saddam Hussein’s regime with direct support from the United States, the planning of multiple bloody coups, fomenting unrest and conflict within Iran’s borders, and carrying out widespread assassinations through proxies of major powers. Furthermore, in a stark act of aggression, the United States and Israel launched a massive military attack against Iran during the 12-day war of June 2025—even as the Islamic Republic was engaged in negotiations with the American government. Each of these acts was designed to divert the Iranian nation from its chosen path.
By the grace of God, and through the steadfast unity and resilience of the Iranian people, these hostile actions and sinister plots have been thwarted.
In January 2026, as a continuation of American-Zionist conspiracies, Iran faced a quasi-coup and the largest terrorist operation since the Revolution—an act of betrayal that resulted in the martyrdom of many of our beloved citizens and caused widespread destruction.
First and foremost, I am profoundly saddened by the loss of life and by the destruction of homes and livelihoods that has brought hardship to so many of my compatriots. I wish to express my deepest sorrow and sincere sympathy to all who have lost loved ones.
Allow me to address a few key points regarding these events:
The initial demonstrations over fluctuations in the national currency, were peaceful in the first week or so.
The situation fundamentally changed in a second phase, when new actors hijacked a peaceful movement and steered it toward bloodshed and chaos.
These actors infiltrated the protests, distributing weapons with the clear intent to target both security personnel and innocent civilians with the apparent goal of maximizing casualties.
The brutality was extreme, with at least three law enforcement officers beheaded or burned alive. Widespread destruction included the complete burning of a bazar in the northern city of Rasht, 749 police stations, 305 ambulances, and over 1200 public and private properties.
Before this phase the President of the United States, by threatening potential military action, inflamed an already tense situation and empowered those seeking violence.
Thus, the tragic loss of life and destruction stem from a calculated campaign of violence by armed insurgents and terrorists, exacerbated by irresponsible foreign provocations.
Extensive evidence points to the direct involvement of foreign states, particularly the United States and Israel, in instigating this unrest and supporting terrorist actions.
Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo publicly acknowledged presence of Mosad agents among the demonstrators.
- Trump openly urged Iranians to ‘keep protesting, take over institutions’
- ‘help is on the way.’
As can be seen, this was not a peaceful protest, but a foreign-orchestrated assault, aiming to destabilize Iran through violence and misinformation.
The critical coverage by certain international media outlets is founded upon misleading narratives and false information. These are propagated by opposition groups in exile and known terrorist organizations, whose coordinated networks have orchestrated a significant disinformation campaign aimed at vilifying Iran.
Ladies and gentlemen, one life lost is one life too many. Our nation grieves for every son and daughter lost. However, the scale of casualties has been exaggerated, with figures inflated into the tens of thousands to manipulate global opinion and justify foreign intervention.
Some outlets have even cited baseless numbers as high as 70,000, attempting to draw a morally bankrupt parallel to the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza. This stands in stark contrast to the confirmed total of 3,117 fatalities. Tragically, the vast majority—2,427 individuals—were either members of our law enforcement and security forces or innocent civilians deliberately targeted by saboteurs and terrorists.
Ladies and gentlemen, what unfolded in January 2026 was the latest in a long series of attempts to destabilize our nation. Unfortunately, it will not be the last. We have witnessed—and endured—such plots since the very first day of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
It is regrettable that some media pundits and analysts continue to openly provoke the US President into taking military action against Iran to save his political credibility, arguing that Iran has crossed “Trump’s red line.” Such reckless provocation, which will inevitably lead to catastrophic loss of life, economic devastation, and regional war and crisis, will demonstrate their malice and disregard for the fate of nations and the fundamental principles of human rights that they claim to uphold.
Ladies and gentlemen, we remain steadfast. As our history demonstrates, Iran is not a nation that bends to every wind. We are rooted in resilience, united in purpose, and unwavering in our defense of justice and sovereignty.
Thank you for your patience.
